1. Clean out the car and the trunk and get rid of everything you won't need on your trip.
2. Pack your car the night before you leave.
3. Plan where things should go by when they are needed. Remember, "last in, first out."
4. Fill a cooler with snacks and drinks and place within reach of the front seat, so you can get to it without stopping.
5. Keep a small trash bag in both the front and back seat.
6. Pack plenty of clean-up materials: tissues, paper towels, wipes, anti-bacterial hand cleaner, larger plastic bags.
7. Keep swimsuits, a change of clothes for dinner, and pajamas at the top of each bag.
8. Include a first-aid kit within easy reach inside the car (include kids' meds and motion-sickness meds).
9. Bring a treasure box: a plastic shoebox where kids can keep found items from the trip.
10. Pack lots of entertainment--from games to coloring books to audio books and DVDs.
